Painted Word - Independence Day 12"
Not much info about the band. All I know is they are Scottish and have released 2 singles back in the eighties - Independence Day, being their debut and Worldwide. This is one killer track that got noticed from some eighties music compilation.

ReplyDeleteThe Painted Word was the name Alan Thompson used rather than an actual band. He'd originally had a band called The Hollow Men who looked like they might be going places in the (very) early eighties - I remember watching them blow an early incarnation of Orange Juice off the stage at Stirling Uni (I think). Anyway, they broke up and Alan signed a long term deal for something like 12 albums as a singer/songwriter, but sadly, never had any real success. He's still about Glasgow I think although his musical career is long behind him. Nice to hear him again.
ReplyDeletenice to hear him again too,we shared flats at stirling uni and then edinburgh and wrote some lovely songs then including one called lily but cant seem to find it anywhere
DeleteHey NB, can't stop playing this song over and over. I've just heard this now and it's GREAT! SALAMAT!!!

i sent you an email na.
ReplyDeleteCool. There's a version of the song on the Park Lane Archives album on iTunes. I know Al, but never wanted to admit to not knowing too much about his music...
ReplyDeleteThe name of the guy is Alan McCusker-Thompson. He used to visit me in Hamburg, Germany whilst being on tour with some friends.
ReplyDeleteThe string arrangements on "Worldwide" were made by Anne Dudley. Widely known from various string-arr.-collaborations and The Art Of Noise.
I will most likely post some stuff (live recordings / singles) in the near future.
Thanks for this scorcher, mate!
...and by the way: there is an other single called "that's the reason i'm alive". soon to be posted on www.this-is-indie.blogspot.com
