This song has captured all the right elements of a top shoegaze song, catchy melody, distorted rhythm, jangly riffs, long flying guitar solo, what more could you ask for? Swimming Pools and Movie Stars was the culprit, hailed from the US of A, these guys were one of the unsung heroes of the 2000's nu-gaze movement. I guess shoegazers were left high and dry with the genre's sudden disappearance in the mid-90s which led to its reincarnation in 2000. Their third EP, by the way, was released by Les Disques Du Crépuscule which made me see the pattern now. They've made three EPs in their three year career (from a semi-reliable source, discogs.com). It seems on every single they make they are being dropped by their labels soon after. I don't believe because they suck, I even think its the opposite, at least to a music critique's perspective. In my theory, their period of existence, 1979-1982 was the time when this particular genre was being discovered, to some still uncharted and majority weren't ready for it yet. I've never heard of their song so I didn't really find it a big deal back then. Getting these two 7" that I am about to post (got them from the same place I got The Dentists and Mock Turtles singles which will be posted soon) gave me the chance to hear them for the first time and I have to admit I was really impressed. My impression of them being just another band who jumped in the Madchester scene bandwagon suddenly changed. I bought their "Best Of" compilation cd from some store and I just thought they were amazing. Almost all their songs were exceptional. What a better way to start a new year than with a good music, this time from a genre that was never introduced in my blog - eurobeat that is. A genre disgrace for many purist, guilty pleasure for synthpopers and considered low class for elitist. While many have categorized this as a eurobeat or italo music because it was sang by an italian artist, I would consider this a crossover between new wave and synth-dance/pop music or simply synthwave. Reason being it still possess the quality of synthpop/newwave we grew to love for years, low octave vocals and not too sell out melody. This particular song by the way had been a hit for some period of time in the Philippines. Italo lovers like DJ T for sure would find this familiar to his ears. I don't know much about East Village but for sure I do know the single Strike Up Matches by Episode Four. Its c86 collector's one of the most sought after EP, a holy grail per se. I just saw one ended on eBay for a whopping $500.00! The magic year was 1988, the time when Hacienda first introduced acid house and rave to the club community, when baggy outfits were the "it" thing and of course the year when this record was released. It was a fun night but my SF trip won't be complete without visiting some Rasputin record stores. I headed to just two of their stores in San Jose the following day as time won't permit. To my dismay the once isle by isle of records are now replaced by cds. The tragic sight made me feel that vinyl is indeed dead. There are few records remained but those are ones worth fueling a bonfire with, if you know what I mean. So I ended up buying some bargain cds and when I say bargain I mean some $1.99, some 50 cents and some are even free! I got some Softies, Trembling Blue Stars, Flying Saucer Attack, Ivy and early Cardigans to name a few. Although worth keeping they are not really worth posting on blog. <div><br /></div><div>This week my posting will be dedicated entirely to Colin Gregory, the man behind the now defunct 1000 Violins and The Dylans. Their music for sure may have been heard by many indiepop fans but I still believe there are some out there who haven't. This first post means a lot to me because during the time when there was no internet and scavenging in every record stores that existed in California is the only way of getting rare 12"s (RandyB and Cino knows what I'm talking about), I used to settle for the Lightning Seeds' Sense 12" flip side that has the rearranged version of Flaming Sword. Then in 1997 the CD Diamonds And Emeralds was released. It contains all songs ever written by Simpson-Broudie, at least to my knowledge. Jeremy Kelly plays guitar who also plays guitar for the The Lotus Eaters and Gedd Quinn plays the keyboards. As a collector I'm very choosy with the artists' materials I complete and the Wild Swans is one of them. I know what I've been doing is kinda redundant, its like re-inventing the wheel. It would be a way lot easier grabbing audio files from some torrent sites or saving images from Google images but in my humble opinion getting contents from other sites just defeats the purpose of having a website you can proudly call your own. Both had come a long way, from the not so famous Bag O Shell then to The Springfields (not even sure which came first) and way later on to the post 90s indiepop outfit Velvet Crush. They were known for creating 60s-influenced, melodic powerpop, kinda like what Teenage Fanclub were known for.
